West Tokyo Joint Center for Sustainability Research and Implementation

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and Technology, and The University of Electro-Communications (hereafter referred to as the "Three Universities") are conducting pioneering education and research activities, leveraging their respective strengths in "Languages, Liberal Arts, and Area Studies," "Food, Energy, and Life Sciences," and "Information and Communications (ICT), Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Photonics." In addition to these strengths, they have been taking advantage of their favorable locations in and near the West Tokyo campus (Tama campus) to promote collaboration at the organizational level.

The three universities already Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research (hereinafter referred to as the "three universities joint department") and the "Reinforcing University Global Reach Project." Furthermore, through these international networks, it is possible to uncover the latest research and social implementation needs in local universities and regions.

In 2022, under the leadership of President of the three universities, the "West Tokyo Three Universities Joint Research Institute for International Social Implementation of Sustainability" (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) will be established. Based on the "educational" achievements, the three universities will further expand and enhance their collaboration into "research" activities and "social implementation" activities that utilize the results of these research, with the aim of contributing to "social contribution" beyond borders and to the realization of a "multicultural coexistence" society.

Taking into account the above background and the strengths and achievements of the three universities, the Institute will focus its activities mainly on various parts of the world, including the "Global South" (places and people around the world that are negatively affected by the globalization of modern capitalism), and has the following three missions:

? Visualize the concept of sustainability and disseminate it to the international community through policy proposals and information dissemination in collaboration with various stakeholders
? Examining and implementing industrial applications and product development based on the results of natural sciences, as well as verifying the sustainability of these activities from the perspective of humanities and social sciences.
? Examination and promotion of the future of inclusive society, focusing on Japan and the Global South

In order to achieve the above mission, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology has established West Tokyo Joint Center for Sustainability Research and Implementation.
