Warning about "illegal part-time jobs"

Updated December 2024

Recently, there have been many reports of young people, including university students, applying for so-called "illegal part-time jobs" through social media, becoming complicit in crimes, and being arrested.
Illegal part-time jobs are recruitment of criminals. Criminal groups use the people they hire for their own convenience and then easily discard them.
If you find a job that seems to have good conditions, such as being "safe," "easy," and "high-earning," be suspicious that it might be a shady part-time job. There are no good deals in the world that allow you to earn a high income safely and easily (in a short time). If you are asked to install a highly anonymous app when applying for a part-time job, it may be a shady part-time job.
Also, if you are worried or in trouble, such as "I think I may have applied for a suspicious part-time job," or "My personal information has been exploited and I am being threatened," do not hesitate to consult the police or those around you (your family, your university (see on-campus counseling services), etc.). Please refer to the following website and make careful decisions and actions to avoid becoming either a victim or a perpetrator.

Appropriate use of SNS etc.

Social media, including social networking sites such as LINE, Instagram, X, and Facebook, is very convenient for communication, but it can also lead to unexpected problems or hurt others due to inappropriate information dissemination. As a result, it may become a bigger problem than you can imagine, such as receiving intensive criticism from others, and "legal punishment" may be imposed regardless of whether or not there is malicious intent.
It may have a serious negative impact on your Campus Life and your future life, so please understand the characteristics of social media and be careful about what you say and post and use it appropriately.
Please also refer to the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Information System User's Guide "1-3 Things to be aware of when using SNS and Internet services" published by Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Information Media Center, and make effective use of it after understanding it.

Don't touch illegal drugs! !

Although posters and other materials are already being used to warn people not to use illegal drugs, there is no end to cannabis-related crimes, especially by university students.
What you do lightly, thinking ``out of curiosity'' or ``just once,'' will definitely end up ruining your life and come back to you.
There are many temptations all around us. Once again, make a strong will to refuse illegal drugs.

Commute to school by public transportation, etc.

Cars and motorcycles other than those specifically approved are not permitted on campus. Also, if you commute by bicycle, be sure to park your bicycle in the designated area. Also, at the Koganei Campus, as of October 2005, if you enter the campus by bicycle, you must register the bicycle. If you enter the campus temporarily, you will need to go through the prescribed procedures.
When riding a bicycle, please observe traffic rules and manners.

Be careful of theft!

Be careful not to keep cash and valuables out of your skin. If it is stolen, please report it to the Student Support Office Student Support Section of each campus. Also, if you have a cash card, please contact your financial institution as soon as possible.

Be careful not to lose or forget items!

If you lose or pick up an item, please report it to the Student Support Office Student Support Section of each campus.

Be careful of fires caused by mishandling!

Be careful about fires on a daily basis, and if you must use fire on campus, be careful about the layout of your surroundings, and be careful to avoid accidents such as electrical leakage when touching electrical equipment.

Be careful about loan sharks and card loans!

Because of the ease of application procedures, many people start out borrowing only small amounts, but when the repayment deadline approaches or the high interest rates force them to borrow from other loan sharks one after another. Also, do not take out unplanned credit card loans. If you are forced to repay a huge amount, it will have a serious impact on not only your Campus Life but also the lives of your entire family.

To avoid being deceived by “unscrupulous business practices”

There has been a rise in fraudulent business practices targeting students. In addition to the fraudulent business practices listed below, there have been new and ingenious methods emerging, so please be extremely careful.
[Problems with mail order sales]
You may be charged just for opening an email sent to your mobile phone or computer, or you may be charged a high fee if you access something thinking it is free.
[Catch-sales]
They approach people on the street asking to conduct surveys, then take them to stores where they are pressured to buy expensive cosmetics and other items.
[Bank transfer fraud]
This is a method in which fraudsters pretend to be sons or grandsons over the phone and trick family members into handing over cash under the pretext of settling a traffic accident or repaying a debt. Do not transfer the money immediately, but check with your family members to make sure it is correct.
[Soliciting students looking for jobs]
College students who are job hunting are forced to sign contracts for English conversation classes and recruitment courses, claiming that they will be "helpful for finding a job." For more information, please refer to the following "National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan" website, "Press Release from the National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan" → "Job Hunting College Students Beware! Aggressive Solicitations for English Conversation Classes and Recruitment Courses."

On website the National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan (opens in a new window), you can find information such as guidance for consumer consultation desks and examples of consultations from consumers. Please make use of it.

Participating in the national pension

The National Pension System is a system that provides intergenerational support across society as a whole.
Anyone aged 20 or older residing in Japan is legally obligated to enroll in the National Pension System and pay insurance premiums.
All students at our university must enroll in the National Pension System when they turn 20 years old.
To enroll, please go to the National Pension Section of the city hall where you are registered as a resident.
Even if you are a student, if you do not pay your insurance premiums or apply for the student payment exemption, and you end up with a disability due to injury or illness, you will not be able to receive the basic disability pension. Therefore, be sure to pay your insurance premiums or apply for the student payment exemption.

Please refer to the "Student Payment Exemption System" on the Japan Pension Service website (opens in a new window).

In addition, the Japan Pension Service's website provides easy-to-understand videos and other information about the National Pension System, its benefits, and how to pay insurance premiums, as well as procedures for applying for student payment exemptions for people who are financially unable to pay their premiums.
Please take a look at the videos and other materials posted.
